National News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the long-awaited free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom (UK) as a blueprint for shared prosperity. PM Modi addressed the press after signing the agreement, officially called the Economic and Trade Agreement, on Thursday (July 24). He also thanked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government for strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April.

According to media reports, PM Narendra Modi said, "We are united in the belief that there is no place for double standards in the fight against terrorism. We also agree that forces promoting extremist ideologies should not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms. Those who use democratic freedoms to weaken democracy itself must be held accountable." This statement points to Pakistan without naming any country.

Security cooperation and action against economic offenders

Prime Minister Modi said that the security agencies of India and the UK will further strengthen cooperation in matters such as the extradition of economic offenders. Reiterating India's stand on global peace and stability, he said, "We have continued to exchange views on peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the situation in West Asia. We support the early restoration of peace and stability. Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations is essential. Today's era is not of expansionism, but of development.

"The role of the Indian diaspora

PM Modi described the people of Indian origin in the UK as a "living bridge" between the two countries. He said, "They brought not only curry from India but also creativity, commitment, and character. Their immense contribution is not only limited to the UK's flourishing economy but is also visible in UK culture, sports, and public service.

"Benefits of FTA

This free trade agreement has the potential to double the bilateral trade between the two countries. India's textile, footwear, gems and jewelry, seafood, and engineering goods industries will benefit. Indian farmers will also benefit greatly, as agricultural and processed food products will get duty-free access to the British market.
